Opportunities & Second Chances
by Patricia Juan
Overview
Opportunities & Second Chances is a piece that allows a listener to hear an imaginative radio show where the host, DJ Shy, read out stories from Filipino Americans about their journey to America. I hope to provoke thoughts about today’s political climate and show people the struggles of a small community of people who wanted better opportunities or second chances.
Background
Using stories gathered from family and friends as well as songs by various artists and sounds from freesound.com, I created my own radio show corner where the DJ reads the stories sent in by listeners.
Influences
Inspired by today's current political climates as well as Stories of Asian America and the stories of my own parents, this piece allows an individual to listen to the stories the DJ reads in order to understand the struggles of a small community and give voice to a community rarely heard.
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this piece to open the listener’s eyes to the struggles of immigrants as well as give voice to a small community rarely heard and to think about today's political climate.

Description
Opportunities & Second Chances is a piece that allows a listener to hear an imaginative radio show where the host, DJ Shy, read out stories from Filipino Americans about their journey to America.
To create this piece, I used Sony Movie Studio ver. 13 to record my voice and put together the whole piece. After recording my voice, I took those recordings to Audacity to tone it down to make it sound like the voice was coming from the radio. I also took three songs by BTOB, Peniel (of BTOB), and Amber Liu and edited them down to short snippets and went through the same process I did for my voice recordings. The radio static came from Freesound.org. Overall, the process took a few days where I spent up to 2 hours per section of this piece.
With this piece, I hope the listener would listen to these stories and realize the struggle of those trying to come here to America. I hope listeners would relate to these stories and think about why these individuals came to America as well as think about the current political climate.
